Reconstruction of the Roman colony Colonia Marciana Ulpia Traiana Thamugadi (now Timgad, Algeria) in antiquity and a site shown today.
The city was founded around 100 CE during the reign of Emperor Trajan. Originally, its inhabitants were retired Roman soldiers. Over time, however, the centre had more than 10,000 Roman citizens.
The city was abandoned at the end of the 5th century CE.
