2,000-year-old grave of warrior from Britannia was discovered

A 2,000-year-old warrior’s grave was discovered in Walberton, southern England. The discovery happened by accident during construction works.

Scientists date the grave to 1 BCE or 1st century CE. On site, among others, was found sword in a beautifully decorated scabbard and spear. The sword was subjected to an X-ray examination, which proved that the beautiful copper-alloy decoration at the scabbard mouth was once perfectly visible. Thus, it can be concluded that a high-ranking warrior was buried in the grave.

The grave also contained the remains of a wooden container – visible as a dark spot – probably used to leave the body of the deceased to the grave. Four ceramic vessels were also found in the grave.
