Almost 3,000 Roman coins have been found in Bulgaria

In 2105, 2,976 silver Roman coins with images of the emperors and their families were found in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. There used to be a Thracian city at the discovery site – Serdica, renamed by the Romans Ulpia Serdica. The coins were found in an earthen pot with the name of the owner of the treasure – one named Selvius Calistus.

Coins have been minted for over 100 years. The earliest coin comes from the time of Emperor Vespasian, who ruled the Empire in 69-79 CE. The oldest ones come from the reign of Emperor Commodus (177-192 CE). Among the treasury, you can find many coins that were created between these years.

Experts have already started researching the numerous find and are carrying out renovation activities. After the works are completed, the treasure is to be displayed to visitors at the Sofia History Museum. It is the second-largest coin found in Serdica.
