Ancient Romans designed a fort in Britain with astronomy in mind. All four gates were aligned with the solstices so that the sun rose along with the winter and summer solstices, flush with each pair of gates.
The fort is located in the County of Cumbria and had a great view of the Eskdale Valley. The camp was built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, who ruled in the years 117-138 CE. It was part of the chain of fortifications that defended the Roman border in Britain.
