In the Italian town of Isernia, in the southern part of Italy, a two-thousand-year-old marble head has been discovered that appears to represent the young Octavian Augustus – the first emperor of Rome.
The discovery took place during renovation works carried out at the medieval walls of the city.
The object is 35 cm high and dates back to 20 BCE – 10 CE. The head was part of a larger sculpture (perhaps 2 meters high) that could have been in a temple dedicated to the Julio-Claudian dynasty or adorn the forum.
