Discoveries at British Air Base in Cyprus

Archaeologists and students from the University of Leicester, thanks to excavations carried out in Cyprus, have gained a lot of new valuable information about buildings from Roman and Byzantine times (3rd-6th century CE).

The excavations by archaeologists took place on the premises of the British RAF Akrotiri air base, with the consent of the English authorities. Research has shown that the base used to house ancient warehouses and workshops, which were destroyed as a result of the earthquake – the same one that razed the ancient city of Kourion (located 13 km north of Dreamer Bay) in 360 CE.

In one of the discovered buildings, there were remains of amphorae for wine and olive oil, as well as smaller pottery.
