First horse remains were discovered in Pompeii

Archaeologists have discovered the remains of an ancient Roman villa in Pompeii, with the remains of the first horse in Pompeii. Excavation work began last year, in August.

The covering happened in the northern district of Pompeii – Civita Giuliana. Items were also excavated: amphorae, part of a wooden bed and a grave.

In order to recreate the silhouette of a deceased horse, scientists had to use the so-called Fiorelli’s method. This technique is based on making plaster casts of the bodies. Stucco plaster is poured through a small hole, which fills the entire empty space of the body, inside the solidified ashes. After the plaster had set, the ash layer was removed, revealing the castings of bodies, objects, building elements, etc.

According to the researchers, the horse had a rather show function, due to its massive stature – larger than other horses – and the decorative elements found nearby.
