Foundations of large structure were discovered in Serbia
In eastern Serbia, in the ancient Viminacium, the foundations of a large building that scientists believe could be the headquarters of the VII Claudia Legion.
For the first time, researchers learned about the remains of structures hidden underground thanks to a georadar and a magnetometer. As it turned out, the stone walls were one meter underground.
The building had 3,500 m2 area; 70 m long and 50 m wide; the building had 40 different rooms. At the moment, 800 m2 have been excavated from under the ground, and outside the walls, traces of waterworks and a fountain have been found.
What’s more, apart from the building, a large number of Roman silver coins were also discovered – denarii and antoniniani from the 3rd century CE. A total of 118 coins were mined.
