Further excavations are starting on site of Roman fort Magna

Excavation work has started in northern England. Archaeologists will start working near Hadrian’s Wall, in Fort Magna. The excavations will last five years.

Due to the proximity of Fort Magna to Vindolanda, scientists are counting on many interesting finds. When only auxilia troops were stationed in the Vindolanda camp, according to historians, in addition to auxiliary troops, there were probably also legionaries in Magna.

So far, scientists have managed to determine the boundaries of the soldiers’ center (vicus) and extract a metal beam from the ground, which was probably part of the arm of a Roman scale, which in turn could have been used to weigh small items transported through the fort. Further work will be supported by hundreds of volunteers.
