Marble gladiator’s head was found in Bulgaria

In summer of 2015 were carried out excavations in the Roman city of Augusta Traiana (southern Bulgaria), where a marble gladiator’s head was found.

Earlier, in August, a team of archaeologists discovered a marble slab from the frieze of an ancient temple at Augusta Traiana, showing two gladiatorial battles and containing an inscription mentioning the Roman emperors.

The said head was found in the same place as the relief showing the warriors. Archaeologists also managed to find another inscription, which was located about 50 meters from the ruins of the temple. Most likely, the place of worship itself was intended for Hermes. In Augusta Traiana, apart from the sacred building, there were other public utilities: a stadium or an odeon.
