New 3D reconstruction of Julius Caesar’s head confirms scientists’ assumptions that the shape of the skull of a Roman leader and politician could be – to put it mildly – unusual.
The archaeologist and anthropologist Maja d’Hollosy came up with the idea of imitating the dictator’s head. A bust from the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden was used as a model.
In a 3D scan, silicone and clay were used to reproduce the portrait of Julius Caesar. As you can see in the photo, scientists managed to achieve incredibly real facial features and the shape of Roman’s head. The clearly large head could have resulted, for example, from complications in childbirth.
