Remains of rabbit from Roman villa again examined
In 1964, in the remnants of the Roman villa in Chichester (south of England), a fragment of the 4 cm long tibia bone was found. In 2017, after testing, it turned out that it belonged to a rabbit.
What’s more, there were no traces of the butcher’s marks on it and it was determined that the animal lived in the first century CE.
The Roman villa in Chichester is the largest building of this type discovered in Britain. It was built in 75 CE Residents of the building were wealthy and kept various animals in their home. The rabbit was probably a pet animal.
