Roman artifacts have been discovered on Swedish island

In 2017, on the Swedish island of Öland (in the southeast of the country), there are the remains of the Sandby borg fort, where scientists discovered gold rings and coins. As it turned out, the objects come from Roman culture.

The found coin was minted between 425-455 CE, i.e. during the reign of Emperor Valentinian III. What’s more, on the coin you can see the figure of the ruler, whose leg rests on the barbarian’s head. Roman rings, in turn, were worn by women and can be judged by their size.

The discovered artefacts were discovered on the site of what used to be a dwelling house that may have belonged to an important local personage or chieftain. Moreover, the objects prove that the tribe had contact with the Roman state and its achievements.

The Sandby Borg fortress itself was discovered in 2010 when traces of the earthwork surrounding the fort and numerous unburied bodies were found. Since then, the site has been an excavation site.
