In 2016, archaeologists discovered the remains of a Roman wall and road in the open near Lancaster Castle. According to specialists, these may be elements of a Roman fort, which was intended to repel the threat from the sea.
The fort was built in a strategic place to protect the province from intruders from the north, in the 4th century CE.
