Roman sarcophagi have been discovered at Stadio Olimpico

Two Roman sarcophagi were accidentally found near a football stadium in Rome in 2017. The objects are made of marble and were probably the last resting place of the dead children of a wealthy Roman family.

The discovery came as the energy company began construction work to build new gas pipelines and lay cabling. The city authorities called a group of archaeologists to the site, whose task was to carefully extract the sarcophagi from the ground.

The objects turned out to date back to the 3rd-4th century CE, and for further research, they were transported to the city centre for further analysis. The sarcophagi were located 3 meters below ground level, near the north wing of the famous Stadio Olimpico stadium, where Lazio and Roma play their matches. It is in the northern stands of the stadium where the biggest team fanatics are located.
