Review: New Frontiers. Law and society in the Roman world

The book “New Frontiers. Law and society in the Roman world”, edited by Paul J. du Plessis, is a book containing eleven scientific articles on Roman law. The book is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration of various authors who raise interesting issues related to law and society in the world of ancient Rome. The book was published by “Edinburgh University Press”.

The articles have been divided into separate four chapters to make it easier for the reader to follow the content:

1. Considering law in theory
2. Analyzing the law in practice
3. Coexistence of economy and law
4. General conclusions

Of course, the book is not for everyone, and the language is demanding, but surely people who want to explore Roman law or are interested in this issue will receive a really solid dose of information, and above all, sources. Authors in their articles often refer to bibliographies, and knowledge is based on reliable materials.

Personally, I was most interested in works on the participation of Roman women in economic life or the concept of conubium – the right for non-citizens to enter into official marriages.

In my opinion, everyone will find something interesting in the collection of articles; altogether, over 200 pages of professional knowledge presented by specialists in Roman law and other issues are waiting for the reader.
