Contubernium was the smallest organized unit of the Roman army, consisting of eight legionaries, called contubernales. In practice, the group was also accompanied by two servants or slaves (calones), who transported equipment, prepared meals, and performed other camp duties. However, they were not counted in the official unit rank. Ten contubernia formed a centuria. Legionaries shared a tent and could be rewarded or punished as a group.

The decanus, usually the most experienced or senior legionary, was the leader of the contubernium, likely appointed by the centurion. He was responsible for organizing the daily life of his group, setting up the tent, maintaining order, and carrying out the orders of his superiors.
