Author of outstanding work on military &#8211; <i>De rei militari<\/i>. <em>In De rei militari<\/em> Vegetius describes himself as a Christian.<\/p>\n<p>We know little about Vegetius&#8217; career and the private sphere. He was responsible for treasury on the court and he was certainly interested in the military and horse breeding due to written works.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"work\"><\/span>Work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"de-rei-militari\"><\/span><em>De rei militari<\/em><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The work also called <i>Epitoma rei militaris<\/i> (&#8220;Concerning Military Matters&#8221;) consists of four books and is focusing on the subject of the military. The work was probably dedicated to <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/teodozjusz-i-wielki\/\">Emperor Theodosius I<\/a> (reigned in 379-395 CE), and the author&#8217;s goal was to emphasize the power of Roman legions from the beginning of the empire and restore discipline &#8211; like in the past times &#8211; in the army during his lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>What is worth emphasizing &#8211; the work <em>De rei militari<\/em> is the only surviving treaty devoted to the military of ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a>. However, the author was not a specialist in history or military matters. Vegetius used the sources available at that time: <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/cato-the-elder\/\">Cato the Elder<\/a>, Celsus, Frontinus, Paternus or official imperial documents.<\/p>\n<p>Vegetius begins his work from the first book, in which he emphasizes the need for reforms in the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/\">Roman army<\/a> during his lifetime. Describes the discipline and training of Roman legionaries from the early Empire. The second book deals with the organization and structure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/units-of-roman-army\/roman-legion\/\">legion<\/a>. The third book focuses on the tactics and principles that a good commander should follow. The fourth book describes Roman siege engines and the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/units-of-roman-army\/ancient-romans-naval-fleet\/\">naval fleet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"digesta-artis-mulomedicinae\"><\/span><i>Digesta Artis Mulomedicinae<\/i><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A work devoted to breeding and treating <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/horses-in-ancient-rome\/\">horses<\/a> and foals.
