{"id":104173,"date":"2022-04-10T09:19:04","date_gmt":"2022-04-10T07:19:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=104173"},"modified":"2022-04-10T09:19:04","modified_gmt":"2022-04-10T07:19:04","slug":"methods-of-counting-time-by-romans","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/methods-of-counting-time-by-romans\/","title":{"rendered":"Methods of counting time by Romans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ancient Romans used two methods to <b>count the past years<\/b>. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Either (1) <b>AUC<\/b> (<em>ab urbe condita<\/em> &#8211; &#8220;from the founding of the City&#8221;, i.e. 753 BCE) or (2) by referring to the year when <b>the office was held by consuls<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The first method was used with both the Roman and Julian calendars. This system was proposed by <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/marek-terencjusz-warron\/\">Marcus Terentius Varro.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, in the 3rd century CE another method of counting time was introduced, proposed by the Church in Alexandria &#8211; <em>Anno Diocletiani<\/em> (CE &#8211; referred to as the &#8220;Age of Martyrs&#8221;, introduced for the accession to the throne of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/dioklecjan\/\">Emperor Diocletian<\/a> in 284 CE).
