{"id":106418,"date":"2022-06-10T09:15:24","date_gmt":"2022-06-10T07:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=106418"},"modified":"2022-06-10T09:15:24","modified_gmt":"2022-06-10T07:15:24","slug":"fragile-fate-of-emperor","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/fragile-fate-of-emperor\/","title":{"rendered":"Fragile fate of emperor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of the first successors of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/oktawian-august\/\">Octavian Augustus<\/a>, only <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/tyberiusz\/\">Tiberius<\/a><b> died a natural death<\/b>. <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/cesarz-kaligula\/\">Caligula<\/a> was stabbed to death, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/klaudiusz\/\">Claudius<\/a> was poisoned, and <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/neron\/\">Nero<\/a> was forced to commit <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-law\/suicide-in-world-of-romans\/\">suicide<\/a>. As it turns out, the emperor&#8217;s life was not easy and comfortable. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In 69 CE legionaries \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/units-of-roman-army\/praetorians\/\">praetorians<\/a> threw from the throne and placed as many as three <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-empire\/roman-emperors\/\">emperors<\/a> on it, sometimes allowing them to reign for only a few months. Sequentially:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/galba\/\">Galba<\/a> &#8211; murdered by the Praetorian Guard;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/marek-salwiusz-othon\/\">Othon<\/a> &#8211; committed suicide after defeating Bedriacum;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/witeliusz\/\">Vitellius<\/a> &#8211; was murdered by Vespasian&#8217;s soldiers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Members of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ustroj\/cesarstwo-rzymskie\/dynastie-rzymskie\/dynastia-flawijska\/\">Flavian Dynasty<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/wespazjan\/\">Vespasian<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/tytus-flawiusz\/\">Titus<\/a> died of natural causes, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/domicjan\/\">Domitian<\/a> had already been murdered in a coup d&#8217;\u00e9tat.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ustroj\/cesarstwo-rzymskie\/dynastie-rzymskie\/dynastia-antoninow\/\">Antonine Dynasty<\/a> (96-192 CE), whose reign is described as the &#8220;golden age of the empire&#8221;, stood out with particular peace and stability. At that time, out of eight rulers, only <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/kommodus\/\">Commodus<\/a> lived to see the murder.<\/p>\n<p>Another ruler of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/pertynaks\/\">Pertinax<\/a> &#8211; despite his goodwill to try to reform the country &#8211; was murdered by the self-ruling Praetorian Guard. His successor <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/didiusz-julianus\/\">Didius Julianus<\/a> had a similar fate after less than three months of rule, also at the hands of the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/wojsko\/jednostki-armii-rzymskiej\/pretorianie\/\">praetorian guard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/septimius-severus\/\">Septimius Severus<\/a> is an exception to the new dynasty he founded &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ustroj\/cesarstwo-rzymskie\/dynastie-rzymskie\/dynastia-sewerow\/\">Severus<\/a> and practically the entire 3rd century CE. Of the six members of the Severus dynasty, only he was to die a natural death while in office. His successors: <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/geta\/\">Geta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/karakalla\/\">Caracalla<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/makrynus\/\">Macrinus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/heliogabal\/\">Elagabalus<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/aleksander-sewer\/\">Alexander Severus<\/a> were murdered under various circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>With the death of the last member of the Severus dynasty, the so-called crisis of the 3rd century in the empire, where the rulers on the throne changed practically every now and then.
