{"id":107505,"date":"2022-07-02T09:48:16","date_gmt":"2022-07-02T07:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=107505"},"modified":"2022-07-02T09:48:16","modified_gmt":"2022-07-02T07:48:16","slug":"reconstruction-of-appearance-of-didius-julianus","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/reconstruction-of-appearance-of-didius-julianus\/","title":{"rendered":"Reconstruction of appearance of Didius Julianus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reconstruction of the appearance of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/didiusz-julianus\/\">Emperor Didius Julianus<\/a> (ruled several months in 193 CE), who gained power in an unusual way by buying it. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At the end of 192 CE, Emperor <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/commodus\/\">Commodus<\/a> died, and in March 193 CE the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/units-of-roman-army\/praetorians\/\">praetorians<\/a> killed his successor &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/pertinax\/\">Pertinax<\/a>. According to historian Cassius Dio, nearly 60-year-old Didius learned about it at a feast. The drunken senator decided to reach for the imperial purple himself. To this end, he went to the praetorian barracks, counting on their support in exchange for a promise of high pay. In the barracks he <b>outbid<\/b> the praetorian prefect Aemilius Letus, who also wanted to buy power from his subordinates, <span class=\"underlined\">offering each soldier of the guard 25,000 sesterces<\/span>. On March 28, 193 CE he was sworn allegiance, and he undertook to restore the fallen statues of Commodus. The <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-republic\/roman-offices\/roman-senate\/\">Senate<\/a> adopted the resolution and recognized <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/didius-julianus\/\">Didius Julianus<\/a> as emperor by the will of the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/\">army<\/a>, senate and people.
