Gemmas were popular as ornaments or seals in the Roman Empire. In <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a>, probably the first to wear a gemma was <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/scypion-afrykanski-starszy\/\">Scipio Africanus<\/a>. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They were already produced in Mesopotamia, Egypt and ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/greece-birth-of-city\/\">Greece<\/a>. They played a decorative, and sometimes even religious and magical role. They depicted human and mythological figures, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/animals-and-hunting-in-world-of-romans\/\">animals<\/a>, plants or religious symbols.
