It was a symbol of a <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/life-of-a-roman-legionary\/\">legionary<\/a>, so taking it off meant &#8220;suspension&#8221; &#8220;in being a soldier. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/year-of-the-four-emperors\/\">year of the four emperors<\/a>, in 69 CE legionaries from Vitellius&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/\">army<\/a> found themselves in the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">eternal city<\/a>. It was then that civilians who did not have much love for the Rhine soldiers began to cut the legionaries&#8217; belts when they were in a dense crowd. When they noticed what had happened, they started murdering all encountered civilians.
