{"id":110593,"date":"2022-08-30T20:04:36","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T18:04:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=110593"},"modified":"2022-08-30T20:06:44","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T18:06:44","slug":"sacred-border-of-rome","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/sacred-border-of-rome\/","title":{"rendered":"Sacred border of Rome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/religia\/pomerium\/\"><em><b>Pomerium<\/b><\/em><\/a> or <em>pomoerium<\/em> (literally &#8220;beyond the mountains&#8221;) was a line of a sacred character delimiting the boundaries of the city of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a>. In legal terms, Rome functioned as an institution only within these borders, beyond which there were simply lands (<em>ager<\/em>) belonging to Rome. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-religion\/pomerium\/\">Pomerium<\/a><\/em> demarcated the range of civil and military power, and the military empire did not exist within its borders. Hence, in the uncertain times of the republic&#8217;s decline, chieftains often convened the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-republic\/roman-offices\/roman-senate\/\">Senate<\/a> in the temples of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/kultura\/architektura-rzymska\/budowle-rzymskie\/pole-marsowe-w-rzymie\/\">the Field of Mars<\/a>, which was already beyond <em>pomerium<\/em>. It was forbidden to enter the city with weapons, except for <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ustroj\/triumf-rzymski\/\">triumphs<\/a>. Moreover, it was not allowed to bury the dead within the <em>pomerium<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/gajusz-juliusz-cezar\/\">Julius Caesar<\/a> received permission from the Senate to bury his ashes within the sacred border, he eventually rested in the family tomb. It is worth adding that <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/caesar-queen-of-nicomedes\/\">Caesar<\/a> was murdered in the Pompey <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/entertainment-in-ancient-rome\/theater-performances-in-ancient-rome\/\">Theater<\/a>, which was located outside the holy city limits. As a result, senators (armed) who could not cross <em>pomerium<\/em> appeared at a meeting with Caesar and could participate in the plot for the life of the dictator.
