In the works of writers of the reign of Octavian Augustus (27 BCE – 14 CE) – e.g. Virgil or Ovid – there are numerous references to the ends of the world, which are to be open to the Romans.

Civil wars, expansion and numerous loot caused the Romans to lose their basic moral values. The most important feature was virtus (virtue). It meant behaviour worthy of a real man (vir), according to the rules of law and honour, and the ability to distinguish between what is good and what is bad.
