The Romans associated this people <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/romes-contacts-with-africa-and-far-east\/\">far east<\/a> of the borders of the Empire primarily for the beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/silk-was-popular-in-rome\/\">silk<\/a> fabric, on which the Chinese held a monopoly. The Middle Kingdom for centuries had enormous profits from the sale of silk, which was very much in demand by the Roman aristocracy. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We can read about the Chinese in the works of many Roman writers: Seneca, Lucan, Statius, Juvenal, Silius Italicus, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/horace\/\">Horace<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/virgil\/\">Virgil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/ovid\/\">Ovid<\/a>, and Propercjus.<\/p>\n<p>Horace additionally mentions the so-called &#8220;Seric arrows&#8221; (<em>sagittas Sericas<\/em>) and talks about the potential threat from the Chinese.
