{"id":111093,"date":"2022-09-11T16:25:44","date_gmt":"2022-09-11T14:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=111093"},"modified":"2022-09-11T18:22:20","modified_gmt":"2022-09-11T16:22:20","slug":"exile-of-philosophers-during-reign-of-domitian","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/exile-of-philosophers-during-reign-of-domitian\/","title":{"rendered":"Exile of philosophers during reign of Domitian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to ancient sources, at the beginning of his reign, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/domitian\/\">Domitian<\/a> (81-96 CE) was to lead to the expulsion of philosophers from <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-provinces\/roman-italy\/\">Italy<\/a> and forbid the Romans to deal with philosophy. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The emperor&#8217;s motives are not entirely clear; whether the decision resulted from a single event or perhaps the madness of the ruler. <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/suetonius\/\">Suetonius<\/a> was at that time a direct witness of the persecution of the intellectual opposition. The immediate cause was the condemnation of Junius Rusticus Arulenus in 93 CE, who wrote praise in honour of a certain Petus Trazea and <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/helvidius-priscus-staunch-republican\/\">Helvidius Priscus<\/a>, who was sentenced to death much earlier<sup class=\"footnote\" data-qtip=\"Suetonius, Domitian, 10\" data-footid=\"1\">1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Domitian&#8217;s actions against philosophers could consist of even three stages; as to this, there are disagreements among scientists. What is certain, however, is that the exiles took place.
