Roman law considered <em>crimen laesae maiestatis<\/em> not only attacks or attempts to overthrow the emperor, but also threats, offensive statements about the person or name of the emperor or <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/roman-sense-of-humor\/\">jokes<\/a> about him. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It also included the desecration of his monument or image, military disobedience to the ruler, and questioning astrologers and fortune-tellers about the emperor&#8217;s future. The crime as <em>extra ordinem<\/em> allowed for action to be taken without taking evidence: without a formal accusation, it could be on the basis of denunciation, also by the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/social-layers-of-ancient-rome\/slavery-in-ancient-rome\/\">slave<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This law was especially respected during the reign of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/tyberiusz\/\">Emperor Tiberius<\/a>. During his reign, about 100 such trials were brought before the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-republic\/roman-offices\/roman-senate\/\">Senate<\/a>, and almost each of them ended with the confiscation of property and the death sentence or <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-law\/suicide-in-world-of-romans\/\">suicide<\/a> of the accused.
