{"id":114966,"date":"2022-11-19T11:46:59","date_gmt":"2022-11-19T10:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=114966"},"modified":"2022-11-19T11:48:10","modified_gmt":"2022-11-19T10:48:10","slug":"suovetaurilia-sacrifice","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/suovetaurilia-sacrifice\/","title":{"rendered":"Suovetaurilia &#8211; sacrifice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a>, the ritual <em>suovetaurilia<\/em> was practised, consisting in sacrificing <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/religia\/bogowie-starozytnego-rzymu\/spis-bogow-rzymskich\/mars\/\">to the god of war, Mars<\/a> a pig (<em>sus<\/em>), sheep (<em>ovis<\/em>) and\u00a0a bull (<em>taurus<\/em>). In this way, they wanted to gain his support and purify the earth &#8211; the so-called <em>lustratio<\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This rite was also called <em>suovitaurilia<\/em> and we know about its existence thanks to the message <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/katon-starszy\/\">Cato the Elder<\/a> in the work &#8220;De Agri Cultura&#8221;. During the ceremony, three <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/animals-and-hunting-in-world-of-romans\/\">animals<\/a> were led around the ground to be cleansed, reciting the text of the oath as they went. After completing the circumnavigation of the earth, the animals were sacrificed and it was judged whether the deity &#8220;accepted&#8221; the sacrifice. The signs were usually divination from the entrails of animals.<\/p>\n<p><em>Suovetaurilia<\/em> took place both in the private and public spheres. Private individuals initiated the rite to cleanse their land, and they usually did so in May, during the festival of <em>Ambarvalia,<\/em>, which was supposed to go around the field.<\/p>\n<p>In the public sphere, the rite was practiced during village holidays, to validate the census or to atone for errors in performing rituals. Typically, <em>s<\/em><em>uovetaurilia<\/em> occurred every 5 years; the break\u00a0was called <em>lustrum.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The ordinance was also performed when the temple was destroyed and a new tabernacle was to be erected in its place. <em>Suovetaurilia<\/em> was carried out, for example, in 69 CE, when the Capitol burned down during the fight for the Roman throne.
