For this reason, the Romans used to call it <b><em>mare nostrum<\/em><\/b>, literally &#8220;our sea&#8221;. This term appears for the first time during the conquest of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-provinces\/list-of-roman-provinces\/roman-sicily\/\">Sicily<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-provinces\/list-of-roman-provinces\/roman-sardinia-and-corsica\/\">Sardinia<\/a> and Corsica during the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/wojny\/wojny-punickie\/i-wojna-punicka\/\">First Punic War<\/a>. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>By 30 BCE the Roman state had sea waters from the Iberian Peninsula to Egypt under its control. At that point, the term applied to the entire Mediterranean Basin.
