{"id":117831,"date":"2023-01-28T17:34:09","date_gmt":"2023-01-28T16:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=117831"},"modified":"2023-01-28T17:34:09","modified_gmt":"2023-01-28T16:34:09","slug":"lucullus-feasts","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/lucullus-feasts\/","title":{"rendered":"Lucullus&#8217; feasts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The famous phrase &#8220;<b>Lucullus&#8217; feasts<\/b>&#8221; comes from the name of a Roman leader and politician from the 1st century BCE <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/lucjusz-licyniusz-lukullus\/\"><b>Lucinius Lucullus<\/b><\/a> (117-56 BCE), who had a reputation as a gourmet. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>He was sometimes described as the greatest glutton of antiquity, who stunned <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a> with his lavish feasts with the most expensive and sophisticated dishes. He is also credited with bringing cherries and apricots to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>He made his wealth on expeditions in the east and <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/wojny\/wojny-rzymu-z-mitrydatesem-vi\/\">battles with Mithridates<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-kingdom\/roman-kings\/\">king<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/neighboring-lands-around-ancient-rome\/pontus\/\">Pontus<\/a>. He spent the money mainly on the construction of luxurious palaces, the most famous of which was the one located in the fashionable town of Tusculum. This is how Plutarch describes it:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"center\">\n<p class=\"quote\">He had also country establishments near Tusculum, with observatories, and extensive open banqueting halls and cloisters. Pompey once visited these, and chided <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/lucius-licinius-lucullus\/\">Lucullus<\/a> because he had arranged his country seat in the best possible way for summer, but had made it uninhabitable in winter.
