{"id":120237,"date":"2023-02-27T09:46:01","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T08:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=120237"},"modified":"2023-02-27T09:46:23","modified_gmt":"2023-02-27T08:46:23","slug":"nicknames-of-roman-emperors","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/nicknames-of-roman-emperors\/","title":{"rendered":"Nicknames of Roman emperors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many of the <b>nicknames of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ustroj\/cesarstwo-rzymskie\/cesarze-rzymscy\/\">Roman emperors<\/a><\/b> in use today were not used in official documents. <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/karakalla\/\">Caracalla<\/a> even got his nickname because of his fondness for a long Gallic cloak with a hood (the prototype of the monastic habit), which in Rome was called <em>caracalla<\/em>. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Officially, however, he was named <em>Lucius Septimius Bassianus<\/em>, and later received <em>Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Bassianus<\/em> to be associated with the imperial <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ustroj\/cesarstwo-rzymskie\/dynastie-rzymskie\/dynastia-antoninow\/\">house of Antonine<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/cesarz-kaligula\/\">Caligula<\/a>, in turn, nicknamed &#8220;shoe&#8221; (<em>caligae<\/em> &#8211; when he was little he wore Roman sandals and from that moment he became the mascot of the army) wore names <em>Gaius Iulius Caesar<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Nicknames vividly resemble our unofficial nicknames, because they commonly refer to character flaws (<em>Celsus<\/em> &#8211; jerk, Tacitus &#8211; silent, Brutus &#8211; stupid), and this to defects of beauty (<em>Cicero<\/em> &#8211; pea, from a wart of this shape, Naso &#8211; nose), and this is the origin (<em>Afer<\/em> &#8211; African), and this is the father&#8217;s profession (<em>Pollio<\/em> &#8211; fuller), and this is family complications &#8211; born feet first) and so on.
