Early Christians left various accounts.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Greek and Latin words used in early Christian sources have an ambiguous meaning. The Greek word used in the New Testament <em>xylon<\/em> &#8211; means a living tree, wood or object made of wood. Another word <em>stauros<\/em> refers to the vertical bar; but in koine (Greek dialect) it means &#8220;cross&#8221;. On the other hand, Latin word <em>crux<\/em> meant not only &#8220;cross&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the method of attaching the transverse beam, the following crosses were distinguished:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>crux commissa<\/em> &#8211; a cross in the form of the letter &#8220;T&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li><em>crux immissa seu capitata<\/em>; &#8211; a standard cross known to us from churches;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>crux decussata or andreana<\/em> &#8211; cross of Saint Andrew in the shape of the letter &#8220;X&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Theodor <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/mommsen-syme-the-nobel-prize-and-octavian-augustus\/\">Mommsen<\/a>, in turn, considered the cross in the shape of the letter &#8220;Y&#8221; to be the earliest shape of the cross.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeological findings, especially from the vicinity of Jerusalem (from 1968), dated to the first century CE, suggest that in the 1st century CE the &#8220;T&#8221; shaped cross was commonly used. This is also mentioned by <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/tertullian\/\">Tertullian<\/a>, Clement of Alexandria or Epistle of Barnabas (dated before 135 CE).<\/p>\n<p>It is worth mentioning that the Roman Emperor <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/constantine-i-the-great\/\">Constantine I<\/a> in the first half of the 4th century CE forbade crucifixion as a form of death penalty, as an expression of respect for the cross of Christ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dalej\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ciekawostka\/jak-wygladalo-ukrzyzowanie-w-antycznym-rzymie\/\">What was crucifixion in ancient Rome like?<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":36212,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"kategorie_ciekawostek":[96],"class_list":["post-50687","ciekawostki","type-ciekawostki","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","kategorie_ciekawostek-faith"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/ciekawostki\/50687","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/ciekawostki"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/ciekawostki"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/ciekawostki\/50687\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/36212"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=50687"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"kategorie_ciekawostek","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/kategorie_ciekawostek?post=50687"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
