The tool was used to measure straight lines and right angles and was the main tool used by Roman geodesists to build <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-art-and-culture\/roman-architecture\/roman-roads\/\">roads<\/a>, buildings or divide agricultural land.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This device was known for its accuracy already in Mesopotamia and <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/greece-birth-of-city\/\">Greece<\/a> in the 4th century BCE. The tool came to <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a> from Etruria and had the name <em>cranema<\/em> or <em>ferramentum<\/em>.
