Sometimes he was accompanied by a <em>venator<\/em> equipped with a bow, whip or spear, which he often fought for money or glory. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Various animals appeared in the arena during hunting: hyenas, elephants, wild oxen, buffaloes, lynxes, giraffes, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/ostriches-according-to-pliny-the-elder\/\">ostriches<\/a>, deer, antelopes, zebras or hares.<\/p>\n<p>The first such hunt (<em>venatio<\/em>) was organized by <em> Marcus Fulvius Nobilior <\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-republic\/roman-offices\/roman-consul\/\">consul<\/a> of 189 BCE in <em><a title=\"Circus Maximus\" href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/kultura\/architektura-rzymska\/budowle-rzymskie\/circus-maximus\/\">Circus Maximus<\/a><\/em> in 186 BCE, on the occasion of Rome&#8217;s capture of Etholia in <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/greece-birth-of-city\/\">Greece<\/a>.
