{"id":58438,"date":"2020-01-21T19:56:52","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T18:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ciekawostka\/marriage-and-children-in-roman-law\/"},"modified":"2020-01-21T19:58:14","modified_gmt":"2020-01-21T18:58:14","slug":"marriage-and-children-in-roman-law","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/marriage-and-children-in-roman-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Marriage and children in Roman law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 18 BCE formed <em>lex Iulia de maritandis ordinibus<\/em>, introducing the obligation to remain married, and in the year 9 CE <em>lex Papia Poppea<\/em>, imposing the obligation to have children.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Both laws apply to both sexes; women aged 20-50 and men aged 25-60.<br \/>\nAs for <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/marriage-and-love-life-in-ancient-rome\/\">marriage<\/a>, in the event of the death of a spouse or divorce a new marriage had to be concluded immediately &#8211; women were privileged here because they had the so-called <em>vacatio<\/em> when they could refrain from remarrying. The sanction for breaking the order was quite sophisticated &#8211; unmarried people could not receive anything from the will.<br \/>\nIn turn, the sanction for not having children was to limit the possibility of inheriting only one half of the saved donation.<\/p>\n<p>However, the privilege of three children &#8211; <em>ius trium liberorum<\/em> &#8211; was definitely more important for women than for men.
