{"id":58791,"date":"2020-02-01T13:30:38","date_gmt":"2020-02-01T12:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ciekawostka\/colossus-near-colosseum\/"},"modified":"2021-03-20T09:47:14","modified_gmt":"2021-03-20T08:47:14","slug":"colossus-near-colosseum","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/colossus-near-colosseum\/","title":{"rendered":"Colossus near Colosseum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The common name <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-art-and-culture\/roman-architecture\/roman-buildings\/colosseum\/\">Colosseum<\/a> is not derived from its &#8220;colossal size&#8221;, but from a huge building nearby (gr. <em>kolossos<\/em>) a statue of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/nero\/\">Nero<\/a> depicted as Helios. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The statue was supposed to be huge and was supposed to be 30 meters high &#8211; according to the message of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/pliniusz-starszy\/\">Pliny the Elder<\/a><sup class=\"footnote\" data-qtip=\"However, Suetonius claims that the statue was 37 meters high.\" data-footid=\"1\">1<\/sup>. It was made of bronze and showed <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/nero\/\">Nero<\/a> in a gesture confirming his authority over the land and the sea. The statue was made by the Greek architect Zenodorus between 64 and 68 CE.<\/p>\n<p>After the death of Nero, the statue was modified to show the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/religia\/bogowie-starozytnego-rzymu\/spis-bogow-rzymskich\/sol\/\">Sol &#8211; solar deity<\/a>. Originally, she was in Nero&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/kultura\/architektura-rzymska\/budowle-rzymskie\/zloty-dom-nerona\/\">&#8220;Golden House&#8221; vestibule<\/a>. Later it was moved before the Coliseum.<\/p>\n<p>We do not have certain information about the statue&#8217;s subsequent fate. It disappeared or was destroyed, most likely in the 5th century CE, as a result of an earthquake or one of the sieges of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a>.
