As it turns out, this gesture was also known in ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The middle finger was referred to in Latin <em>digitus impudicus<\/em>, meaning &#8220;shameless, indecent or offensive finger&#8221;. Why such an understanding? Mainly due to the shape of the hand, which resembles a <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/phallus-symbol-in-roman-and-greek-world\/\">phallus<\/a> from the front (middle finger) with testicles on the sides (curled fingers).<\/p>\n<p>Its use is described, among others <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/martial\/\">Martial<\/a>, in one of his songs; namely, a certain figure appears in good health and straightens the &#8220;indecent [finger]&#8221; towards three doctors (<em>Epigrammata<\/em> VI.70.5).<\/p>\n<p>In late antiquity, Isidore of Seville in his work <em>Etymologiae<\/em> reports that the middle finger was used when accusing someone of &#8220;shameful action&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":60767,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"kategorie_ciekawostek":[77],"class_list":["post-60769","ciekawostki","type-ciekawostki","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","kategorie_ciekawostek-unknown-facts"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/ciekawostki\/60769","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/ciekawostki"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/ciekawostki"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/ciekawostki\/60769\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/60767"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=60769"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"kategorie_ciekawostek","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/kategorie_ciekawostek?post=60769"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
