{"id":76410,"date":"2020-08-29T22:54:56","date_gmt":"2020-08-29T20:54:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=76410"},"modified":"2020-08-29T22:55:52","modified_gmt":"2020-08-29T20:55:52","slug":"what-were-gladiators-drinking","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/what-were-gladiators-drinking\/","title":{"rendered":"What were gladiators drinking?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/entertainment-in-ancient-rome\/gladiator-fights\/\">Roman gladiators<\/a> as an <b>energy drink<\/b> probably drank a drink made of vinegar, water and plant ash &#8211; this was the conclusion of scientists studying the remains of warriors from Ephesus (modern Turkey), discovered in 1933. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Analyzing the remains of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/entertainment-in-ancient-rome\/gladiator-fights\/\">gladiators<\/a> (22 preserved bodies), scientists from Austria noticed that the bones contained almost twice as much strontium as lime; compared to other townspeople (31 surviving bodies) who followed a similar diet<sup class=\"footnote\" data-qtip=\"The Romans&#039; diet was not rich in protein. The gladiators, like other residents, ate a lot of grain products (mainly barley and wheat) and little meat. Broad beans were also eaten. Due to the fact that gladiators were mainly based on a barley diet, they were called hordearii - meaning &#039;barley eaters&#039;.\" data-footid=\"1\">1<\/sup>. Based on these studies, there was a suspicion that maybe gladiators drank a special drink. Ash was used in the kitchen by the Romans to give it a &#8220;smoky&#8221; taste and for health purposes.<\/p>\n<p>It was believed that the drink reduces pain, increases immunity, regenerates the body and rebuilds the bones<sup class=\"footnote\" data-qtip=\"Nowadays, after a hard effort, we ingest calcium and magnesium.\" data-footid=\"2\">2<\/sup>. This type of drink is mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/pliniusz-starszy\/\">Pliny the Elder<\/a> in his work &#8220;Natural History&#8221;, which suggested that gladiators drank it just after the fight.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"center\">\n<p class=\"quote\">Your hearth should be your medicine chest. Drink lye made from its ashes, and you will be cured.
