{"id":93500,"date":"2021-07-15T16:15:13","date_gmt":"2021-07-15T14:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=93500"},"modified":"2022-08-23T21:17:38","modified_gmt":"2022-08-23T19:17:38","slug":"clodius-iustitium-and-earthquake","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/clodius-iustitium-and-earthquake\/","title":{"rendered":"Clodius, iustitium and earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 58 BCE Publius Clodius, using his powers of the people&#8217;s tribune, ordered the stalls to be closed and trade within <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a> to be stopped. It was the first step towards the introduction in Rome of the <em>iustitium<\/em> &#8211; ie the state of emergency. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Its introduction meant that Rome was in mortal danger. Clodius decided to take this step to convince the citizens that the republic is in crisis and that only he is able to stop it. In this way, he wanted to gain support for his political plans.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/cyceron\/\">Cicero<\/a> used the incident against Clodius. In his speech <em>De Haruspicum Responsis<\/em> in which he defended himself against the accusation of sacrilege that was to lead to earthquakes in Rome, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/cicero\/\">Cicero<\/a> recalled the closure of stores by Clodius and presented them as part of a larger plot to gain power by Clodius.
