{"id":97185,"date":"2021-10-23T17:44:08","date_gmt":"2021-10-23T15:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=ciekawostki&#038;p=97185"},"modified":"2021-10-23T17:44:08","modified_gmt":"2021-10-23T15:44:08","slug":"phoenix-in-message-of-pliny-the-elder","status":"publish","type":"ciekawostki","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/phoenix-in-message-of-pliny-the-elder\/","title":{"rendered":"Phoenix in message of Pliny the Elder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/pliniusz-starszy\/\">Pliny the Elder<\/a> in his preserved work &#8220;Natural History&#8221; left us a lot of information about various species of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/animals-and-hunting-in-world-of-romans\/\">animals<\/a> as well as creatures that were born in the minds of people. A great example of the latter group is the famous phoenix. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to the accounts of Pliny, the phoenix lives in <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/neighboring-lands-around-ancient-rome\/arabia-in-roman-times\/\">Arabia<\/a> and, as he himself claims, he does not know if the information about this amazing animal is not just a fairy tale. The phoenix is \u200b\u200bto be the size of an <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/eagle-symbol-of-rome\/\">eagle<\/a>, the neck is golden and the rest of the body is purple; the tail, in turn, has blue and red feathers. The phoenix is \u200b\u200bsupposed to live for 540 years<sup class=\"footnote\" data-qtip=\"Herdotus believed that the phoenix lived 500 years; other sources said more than a thousand years.\" data-footid=\"1\">1<\/sup> and when it ages, it builds a nest of cinnamon and incense and then dies there. From the preserved bones and ashes a new bird is born, which as yet a chick carries the nest to the City of the Sun<sup class=\"footnote\" data-qtip=\"Probably Heliopolis, in upper Egypt.\" data-footid=\"2\">2<\/sup> and places it there on the altar in honour of the sun god; thus he honours his predecessor.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Pliny tells after Cornelius Valerianus that the phoenix was once to arrive in Roman-ruled Egypt &#8211; during the consulate of Quintus Pluatius and Sextus Papinius in 36 CE. He was to appear in <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a> during the reign of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/klaudiusz\/\">Emperor Claudius<\/a> in 47 CE and it was shown at the comitium in the place where people gathered.
