{"id":156188,"date":"2025-06-09T23:10:21","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T21:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=odkrycia-rzymskie&#038;p=156188"},"modified":"2025-06-09T23:10:21","modified_gmt":"2025-06-09T21:10:21","slug":"extraordinary-find-in-ancient-liternum","status":"publish","type":"odkrycia-rzymskie","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/discoveries\/extraordinary-find-in-ancient-liternum\/","title":{"rendered":"Extraordinary find in ancient Liternum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Giugliano, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-provinces\/roman-italy\/\">Italy<\/a> (near Naples), on the site of the former Roman settlement of Liternum, archaeologists have made a spectacular discovery \u2013 they have uncovered a 2,000-year-old necropolis with a unique tomb, probably belonging to a gladiator.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Among the graves, a marble inscription was found commemorating a gladiator \u2013 although his remains have not been found, it is believed that he was cremated or his ashes were transferred. The burial site itself indicates that these warriors enjoyed greater respect in <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/\">Roman society<\/a> than is often assumed.
