{"id":50538,"date":"2019-05-27T20:26:11","date_gmt":"2019-05-27T18:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/roman-buildings\/amphitheater\/"},"modified":"2020-08-27T10:59:06","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T08:59:06","slug":"amphitheater","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-art-and-culture\/roman-architecture\/roman-buildings\/amphitheater\/","title":{"rendered":"Amphitheater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The amphitheater (<em>amphiteatrum<\/em>) was an open arena in the shape of an ellipse or a circle, surrounded &#8211; mostly with step-by-row rows of seats for spectators and intended for public screenings, among others <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/entertainment-in-ancient-rome\/gladiator-fights\/\">gladiator fights<\/a>, fighting with wild <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/animals-and-hunting-in-world-of-romans\/\">animals<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/entertainment-in-ancient-rome\/naumachiae\/\">naumachia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the ancient Greek theater, it was an open-air audience, arranged semicircularly on the slopes of hills, equipped with stone seats. In ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a>, this building evolved from a separate courtyard, on which <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/entertainment-in-ancient-rome\/gladiator-fights\/\">gladiators<\/a> fought. Around the courtyards, benches began to be placed, which in time were placed in several rows on a dump. Later, the whole was surrounded by a wall. Eventually, the amphitheater became a great entertainment complex with an audience (<em>cavea<\/em>) often accommodating tens of thousands of spectators, with many chambers, masts for unshielding the cover (<em>velarium<\/em>) and many other amenities.<\/p>\n<p>During the Roman Empire, hundreds of amphitheatres were built, mainly in Italy and the west.
