Supreme legislative and judicial power rested with the people and was exercised through a complex system of popular assemblies. These various assemblies included the tribunal comitia (<em>comitia tributa<\/em>), the centurial comitia (<em>comitia centuriata<\/em>), the curial comitia (<em>comitia curiata<\/em>), and the plebiscite concilium.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate, composed of patricians, exercised the highest political and administrative power. During the mature republic, this office began to play a leading role in the state.<br \/>\nThe last power, the executive power, was exercised by officials (<em>magistratus<\/em>) creating a magistracy with limited powers and terms of office.<\/p>\n<p>Officials were divided into <b>ordinary<\/b> (<em>ordinarii<\/em>) regularly elected for terms of office:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/two-headed-rome-about-roman-consuls-and-their-election\/\">Consuls<\/a><\/b> &#8211; there were two of them, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/\">army<\/a> commanders. The highest Roman officials became governors of the most important <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-provinces\/\">provinces<\/a>. They had the legislative initiative.<\/li>\n<li><b>Praetors<\/b> &#8211; supervised the judiciary, judges.<\/li>\n<li><b>Censors<\/b> &#8211; appointed for 1, 5 years every 5 years. They kept a census (property status, number of children) and drew up lists of senators. They took care of the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-economy\/budget-of-ancient-rome\/\">budget<\/a> and guarded the morality of the citizens.<\/li>\n<li><b>Aediles<\/b> &#8211; dealt with public order (e.g. cleaning streets), organized games and distributed grain. They held their office for a year.<\/li>\n<li><b>Tribune of the Plebs<\/b> &#8211; they protected the rights of the plebeians. The introduction of the office of people&#8217;s tribune was a great success. They had a limited right to veto the decisions of other officials.<\/li>\n<li><b>Quaestors<\/b> &#8211; they were collecting taxes.
