Already during the reign of Octavian <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/augustus\/\">Augustus<\/a> (27 BCE &#8211; 14 CE), the rituals associated with this event were mysterious and incomprehensible.<\/p>\n<p>In May, a procession of pontifics, vestals and praetors followed a route consisting of 27 stops (<em>sacella<\/em> or <em>sacraria<\/em>), where on each of them those taking part in the procession received mannequins (<em>effigies<\/em> or <em>simulacra<\/em>) made of cane and straw. After visiting each station, the procession went to <em>Pons Sublicius<\/em> &#8211; the oldest bridge in Rome &#8211; from where all the puppets were thrown into the Tiber.<\/p>\n<p>The celebrations of <em>argea<\/em> continued until the late <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-empire\/\">Roman Empire<\/a>, despite the fact that the context of the holiday was not well known. This proves how the Romans were attached to tradition and connected with <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-religion\/\">religion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/owidiusz\/\">Ovid<\/a>, this ritual was a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/suovetaurilia-sacrifice\/\">sacrifice<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-religion\/gods-of-ancient-rome\/list-of-roman-gods\/honor\/\">honor<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/religia\/bogowie-starozytnego-rzymu\/spis-bogow-rzymskich\/saturn\/\">Saturn<\/a> or the god of the Tiber River &#8211; Tiberinus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Argei were archaic celebrations in ancient Rome that took place on March 16-17 and May 14-15.
