Contubernium<\/em> was the smallest organized unit of the Roman army<\/a>, consisting of eight legionaries, called contubernales<\/em>. In practice, the group was also accompanied by two servants or slaves<\/a> (calones<\/em>), who transported equipment, prepared meals, and performed other camp<\/a> duties. However, they were not counted in the official unit rank. Ten contubernia<\/em> formed a centuria<\/a>. Legionaries shared a tent and could be rewarded or punished as a group.<\/p>\n

The decanus<\/em>, usually the most experienced or senior legionary<\/a>, was the leader of the contubernium<\/em>, likely appointed by the centurion.
