On the left a soldier from the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/military-formations-of-ancient-romans\/battle-and-marching-formations-of-ancient-romans\/\">formation<\/a> <a title=\"Triarii\" href=\"\/?page_id =1230\"><em><b>triarii<\/b><\/em><\/a>, on the right one of the <a title=\"Hastati\" href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/units-of-roman-army\/hastati\/\"><em><b>hastati<\/b><\/em><\/a> or <a title=\"Principes\" href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/units-of-roman-army\/principes\/\"><em><b>principes<\/b><\/em><\/a>.            <\/div>\n        \n        \n    <\/div>\n    \n<p><em>Principes<\/em> were legionaries fighting in the second line of the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/military-formations-of-ancient-romans\/maniple\/\">maniple<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-republic\/\">Roman Republic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the singular <em>princeps<\/em>, was armed like <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/units-of-roman-army\/hastati\/\">hastati<\/a> &#8211; a short sword (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/equipment-of-roman-legionary\/gladius-roman-sword\/\">gladius<\/a><\/em>) and two 120 cm javelins (<em>pila<\/em>). They wore chainmail, helm, and greaves. They had to collect the equipment themselves. According to Polybius&#8217; traduction condition of the defensive armament of <em>hastati<\/em>, <em>principes<\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/units-of-roman-army\/triarii\/\">triarii<\/a><\/em> were the same and depended mainly on the wealthiness of the soldier.<\/p>\n<p>Principes were older than <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/units-of-roman-army\/hastati\/\"><em>hastati<\/em><\/a> but younger than <em>triarii<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>They were recruited out of men from 24 to 30. Like <em>hastati<\/em>, they used tactic &#8216;pilum-gladius&#8217; which consists of throwing <em>pila<\/em> and then fighting with swords.<\/p>\n<p>A standardized <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/\">army<\/a> after Marius&#8217; reform was similar to <em>principes<\/em> based on look and equipment.<\/p>\n<p>During the battle, <em>principes<\/em> were used only when the first line was beaten. Therefore <em>principes<\/em> would make a counter-attack that should crush an exhausted enemy.
