Principes<\/em> were legionaries fighting in the second line of the maniple<\/a> in the Roman Republic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the singular princeps<\/em>, was armed like hastati<\/a> – a short sword (gladius<\/a><\/em>) and two 120 cm javelins (pila<\/em>). They wore chainmail, helm, and greaves. They had to collect the equipment themselves. According to Polybius’ traduction condition of the defensive armament of hastati<\/em>, principes<\/em> and triarii<\/a><\/em> were the same and depended mainly on the wealthiness of the soldier.<\/p>\n

Principes were older than hastati<\/em><\/a> but younger than triarii<\/em>.<\/p>\n

They were recruited out of men from 24 to 30. Like hastati<\/em>, they used tactic ‘pilum-gladius’ which consists of throwing pila<\/em> and then fighting with swords.<\/p>\n

A standardized army<\/a> after Marius’ reform was similar to principes<\/em> based on look and equipment.<\/p>\n

During the battle, principes<\/em> were used only when the first line was beaten. Therefore principes<\/em> would make a counter-attack that should crush an exhausted enemy. This manoeuvre lets hastati<\/em> regroup and rest.<\/p>\n

Principes like hastati<\/em> were divided into 10 maniples 120 soldiers each.<\/p>\n
