It was a Roman festival in honour of the Roman agrarian god, Bona Dea, daughter of Faunus. This holiday was worshipped only by women, due to the nature of Bona Dea herself &#8211; the goddess who is both virgin and responsible for the fertility of women.<\/p>\n<p>Although she had a temple on the Aventine Hill, her feast was celebrated in the house of an important Roman family. Everything male was strictly forbidden to enter the festival, including male <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/animals-and-hunting-in-world-of-romans\/\">animals<\/a>. We do not know much about the appearance of the celebrations themselves, because there are no records of it. Even in ancient times, the holiday was extremely mysterious, about which virtually nothing men knew.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"clodius-pulchers-scandal\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/scandal-with-mysteries-of-bona-dea\/\">Clodius Pulcher&#8217;s Scandal<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the winter of 62 BCE, there was a <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/scandal-with-mysteries-of-bona-dea\/\">scandal<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-republic\/\">Roman Republic<\/a> &#8211; namely the <em>popularis<\/em> Publius Clodius Pulcher, an ally of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/caesar-queen-of-nicomedes\/\">Caesar<\/a>, crept into the house of his wife <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/pompeii\/\">Pompeii<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/lucius-cornelius-sulla\/\">Sulla<\/a>, where the mysteries related to the holiday were also held. Disguised as a woman, he began to seduce the women participating in the ceremony.
