There is a lot of controversy related to this unit. <b>Vegetius<\/b> defines this <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/military-formations-of-ancient-romans\/battle-and-marching-formations-of-ancient-romans\/\">formation<\/a> as &#8220;light infantry&#8221;, not reflecting its importance as a combat unit (Vegetius, <em>De re militari<\/em>, p. 34.).<\/p>\n<p>In the &#8220;Civil War&#8221; of <b><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/gajusz-juliusz-cezar\/\">Caesar<\/a><\/b> we meet the most sensible description of a unit that they were selected light infantrymen of assault troops. Marian Plezia, on the other hand, in his book &#8220;S\u0142owniku \u0142aci\u0144sko-polskim&#8221; probably most aptly calls this formation &#8220;<span class=\"underlined \">commandos<\/span>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>These soldiers were armed with a spear, a few spears, a sword, lighter armour (a simple bronze breastplate instead of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/equipment-of-roman-legionary\/lorica-hamata\/\">lorica hamata<\/a><\/em>), a <em>coolus<\/em> helmet and a small oval shield (instead of a heavy <em><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/equipment-of-roman-legionary\/scutum\/\">scutum<\/a><\/em>). During the march, the task of <em>antesignani<\/em> was to protect the marching columns and secure the area. In combat, these units protected\/supported the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-army\/units-of-roman-army\/roman-legion\/\">legion<\/a> attacked enemy skirmishers or accompanied in cavalry combat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Antesignani were excellent soldiers facing heavy infantry.
