However, several decades later there was a Roman colony on the site of Carthage, and <a title=\"Gaius Julius Caesar\" href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/gajusz-juliusz-cezar\/\"><b>Julius Caesar<\/b><\/a> in 44 BCE restored its old name.<\/p>\n<p>During the empire, the city flourished as the center of the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-republic\/roman-offices\/roman-senate\/\">senate<\/a> province of <em>Africa Proconsularis<\/em>, the granary of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a>.<br \/>\nIn its decline it became the center of a rapidly spreading <a title=\"Christianity in Ancient Rome\" href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/religia\/chrystianizacja-starozytnego-rzymu\/\">Christianity<\/a> in North Africa.<\/p>\n<p>After the reform of the imperial administration, carried out by <b><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/diocletian\/\">Diocletian<\/a><\/b>, the province of <em>Africa Byzacena<\/em> was separated in its southern part, with its capital in <b>Hadrumetum<\/b> (modern Sousse).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa (Africa, later Africa proconsularis) was the Roman province of what is now Tunisia, with its capital in Carthage.
